During the war between Venice and the Ottoman Empire, known as the Cretan War, a need for the improvement of Šibenik’s fortification system arose. After the Venetian government denied the request for improvement of the fortification system due to lack of funds, the citizens of Šibenik took the matter into their own hands. In 1646, in only two months, two fortresses – St. John’s Fortress and Barone Fortress – were built, along with a more then 2 kilometres long defence line around Šibenik. These structures proved crucial during a month long siege, after which the Ottoman army withdrew.

Today, you can immerse yourself in these deciding events with augmented reality technology, available at the recently revitalized Barone Fortress.

You can also taste the rustic regional cuisine in our gastronomic and cultural centre at Barone Fortress and find a variety of authentic products of local family farms and manufacturers. Take a part of Šibenik home with you!
